AFRIFORUM, an organisation well-known for its ‘watchdog’ role in the community, has taken the initiative to equip women in the art of self-defence.

In a time when crime is on the rise and many women have fallen victim to violence, AfriForum recently joined forces with Abrie Kilian, Head Instructor at the prestigious Kilian Academy, as well as Chris Venter, also from Kilian Academy, to offer a basic course in self-defence to women who have made the choice to arm themselves with the knowledge to protect themselves from acts of violence.

As Women’s Month neared its end, the message it represents still fresh in the minds of those the concept aims to empower, Kilian and Venter, who are masters in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a graceful form of martial arts, which, in recent years has put Vryheid on the map for hosting several successful tournaments, instructed two groups of women, of varying ages, in self-defence techniques.

Kilian and Venter were able to cram into only two and a half hours, several simple, yet effective, movements designed to enable women to protect themselves from assailants with malicious intent and potential rapists.
