Spring Day at Edukidz

Excited learners soon compared flowers, with a couple of them even identifying their flowers by name

Edukidz pupils arrived at school on ‘Spring Day’ with flowers in their hair and pinned on their shirts. The smell of flowers permeated the air as the learners made their arrival at school.

Excited learners soon compared flowers, with a couple of them even identifying their flowers by name!

Soon an interesting discussion of differences and similarities evolved. During discussion time, the little ones got to learn the different parts of the flower – from root to stem to leaves, and of course the flower itself with its petals. The discussion in the classroom flowed through to the outdoors and the gardens in the area, as class by class walked around the neighbourhood.

The learners smelled a variety of flowers and soon discovered that they all smelled different, with some even being rather unpleasant.

The cacti garden at school is always a hit, as learners are fascinated by the prickles and thorns and bright colours of this species.
Creative work followed and soon every learner completed a painted picture of a bed of colourful flowers made with the tips of forks and dipped into pots of paint.

A challenge was also put to every learner to go home and plant a packet of seeds and experience growth from the soil up. This being just a little attempt to encourage a change from consumer to producer.
