Luke sings to success

Luke's impressive talent displayed in her great come-back performance of Mali by Zahara, is to thank for a spot in the Top 16

Not many make it past the group rounds on Idols South Africa, but Estcourt-born Luke (Nontobeko) Ntombela has managed to. Luke, along with 15 others, has made it to the Top 16 and is ready for your votes.

Next Sunday the female contestants will go first for your votes at the first Live Show of the 12th season. The show will begin at 5pm, on Sunday, September 4 on Mzansi Magic DStv Channel 161.

Since the Sun City theatre is under construction, the first round of theatre week took place at the Wild Coast Sun in Port Edward, KwaZulu-Natal. Contestants had no chance to take in the lovely surrounding views, let alone unpack their bags.

Upon their arrival they had to sing to save themselves a spot, gladly Luke was among the few that got four nods during auditions, which meant she was saved for a week longer.

The following Sunday, August 14 Luke fumbled her way through Marvin Gaye’s Heard It through the Grapevine during the group performance. Her strong group performance with Karabo and Lucia saved her.

The former waitress made sure to sing her heart out during her solo performance on Sunday, August 21, receiving impressive comments from Judge Somizi. She was determined to make sure viewers forgot all about her semi-disastrous group round performance.

“I could not believe my ears when I was called up first,” said Luke.

Luke’s impressive talent displayed in her great come-back performance of Mali by Zahara, is to thank for a spot in the Top 16, which was revealed this past Sunday, August 28.

When asked what the journey thus far has been like Luke said:

“It’s nerve-wracking to be honest, but also extremely exciting because as an upcoming artist, my dream is unfolding.Learning the lyrics to a song you have never heard before in less than a day is a challenge,” added Luke.

The 26-year-old manages to connect with the song on a deeper level; that’s her solution.

“Our vocal coaches are amazing and are always helping us take good care of our voices. My fellow contestants are all friendly and we all get along well. By faith I will make it beyond the top 10,” on that note Luke concluded.
