Residents tackle High Street bridge

DRIVEN by concern for Vryheid motorists, two friends, who became tired of waiting for the municipality to finish the High Street bridge, decided to do something about it themselves.

Both men were adamant about not wanting to be named, saying that knowing they had done something to help the community, was all they really wanted.

For the past two years, there were mounds of sand and gravel lying in the road that had to be manoeuvred around making it impossible for two vehicles to pass alongside each other on the narrow road. Motorists who veered too much to the outside of the road risked plunging down a steep bank into a ditch.

“One vehicle did actually end up in the ditch last Saturday,” said the men. “We live in the area and we believe that if every resident just took responsibility for what was around their house, instead of complaining all the time, we would have a great town.”

On Monday afternoon, one of the men used his loader to excavate soil and carry it to the bridge, while the other used garden implements to compact the soil and level it.
While it is not a permanent solution, they hope their efforts will render their neighbourhood a little safer for now.
