Once a flagship of progress, it is now in dire need of refurbishment.

At the 2016 State of the Town Address and Budget Speech, outgoing Mayor, Afzul Rehman assured residents the library would receive the necessary attention to regain its stature.

Following a debate in Council regarding the use of the funds, it was decided renovations would be made to the current facilities, instead of erecting a new building.

“With available funding taken into consideration, the project was divided into two phases. Phase 1 will include maintenance of the library exterior, sealing of the roof, minor extensions, as well as refurbishment of the interior,” said Community Services Culture and Amenities spokesperson, Aletta Botes.

Phase 1 commenced on July 18, and the project is scheduled to be completed by December this year.

“Phase 2 will consist of an extension to the building and removal of offices in order to increase floor space in the main library area, all of which are pending the availability of funding,” Mrs Botes said.

The extension in Phase 2 will include an extended study area, computer room and work area for the staff.

“Subsequent to this refurbishment, the library building will be in compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Regulations, regarding emergency exits.

“This will create an environment that is more user friendly to people with disabilities,”concluded Mrs Botes.

Library users are requested to be patient during the refurbishment –the end result will be worth it!
