Learners get new ‘wheels’

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) donated 16 specialised wheelchairs to Kwazamokuhle School for the Handicapped in Loskop

The spirit of ‘Ubuntu’ was front and centre when the Road Accident Fund (RAF) donated 16 specialised wheelchairs to Kwazamokuhle School for the Handicapped in Loskop on Friday, July 22.

The donation was made at the Department of Transport’s (DoT) request and forms part of the RAF’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme.

Proceedings were graced by the DoT’s Deputy Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, while Dr Eugene Watson was accompanied by the RAF Chief Strategy Officer Mantiti Kola and other members of the RAF senior management.

Kwazamokuhle School is a rural special school for the disabled situated in the area of ePhangweni Mission, 20km from Estcourt. It caters for the learning impaired, including mentally and physically disabled learners.

Some of the children are provided with skills training, which includes block making (bricks), pottery, material printing, baking, gardening and needlework.

Deputy Minister Chikunga said the school’s principal approached her department about their plight.

“I immediately spoke to the CEO of the RAF, Dr Eugene Watson and this is how the donation of these electric chairs came about and they were delivered to the school as we speak.”

Dr Watson said the RAF was honoured to be making a small but important contribution towards alleviating the physical burden experienced by the learners.

Highlighting the sad plight of many children today, he encouraged the learners to strive for excellence, no matter what so that they too could one day plough back into their communities.
