Herald team spreads Mandela Day cheer

CURIOUS smiles, joyous laughter and spontaneous applause greeted the arrival of the Vryheid Herald staff at the Ikusasa Labo Disabled Care Centre last week.
The Herald team decided to dedicate its 67 minutes for Mandela to assisting the volunteer-based organisation, which provides a safe and loving haven for children with cerebral palsy, while their parents are at work.
Groceries, toiletries, tasty treats, and warm clothes were purchased the previous week and handed over on Wednesday.

Herald staff used the opportunity to get to know the selfless women who volunteer their time to care for the children, and spent some time playing with the children at the centre. A special gift was prepared for the founder of the Care Centre, Grace Mbatha, whose love for children has lead her to take abandoned and orphaned children with disabilities into her home, where she can ensure their well-being. Mrs Mbatha has never let the financial constraints of being a pensioner deter her from bringing joy to the children’s lives. However, she welcomes any assistance from the community.

The Care Centre, itself, was built with donations and funds raised by the Bikers 4 Eva club.
Ntombifuthi Qwabe, the mother of 14-year-old Mpho, said that having a child with cerebral palsy is difficult but makes you appreciative of everything God gives you.
“I want to thank Grace for opening this place (the Care Centre). I am a single mother and now I know that when I go to work, there will be a safe place for me to take Mpho,” said Ms Qwabe.
