Update: Female ANC candidate killed in ambush

The car was heavily marked with ANC regional election regalia

41-year-old ward 20 candidate Khanyisile Ngobese-Sibisi was killed in a deadly ambush in Centenary Road near the Leonardsville Sports Ground yesterday (Monday) afternoon.

It would appear that as she drove past gunmen who had been waiting for her, they opened fire with assault rifles. A hail of bullets shattered the driver’s side window of the vehicle she was in, a Mercedes.

The car was heavily marked with ANC regional election regalia.

She was rushed straight to hospital, but pronounced DOA (dead on arrival) at La Verna Hospital.

According to the HAWKS, police can confirm that a 41-year-old female was shot and later died in the Ladysmith area on Monday afternoon. It is alleged that the victim was inside the vehicle with other occupants when they were attacked by unknown gunmen.

According to police, she was taken to hospital, where she died on arrival.

HAWKS members are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder. The motive of the killing is unknown and no arrest has been made at this stage.

“We urge our community to work hand-in-hand with the police so that we can bring the perpetrators to book,” said Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.

This is the second attack on an ANC candidate in less than two weeks.
