Update: ANC candidate ambushed in drive-by shooting

A gunman drove past and opened fire on the vehicle with an R5 rifle

Yesterday (Monday) at about 2.25pm, the deceased (40) was on her way to attend a 67 Minutes project in Acaciavale when the incident happened in Centenary Road close to the venue.

She and three others were travelling in a Mercedes-Benz when a gunman in a white vehicle, possibly a Nissan Sentra, drove past and opened fire on the Mercedes with a rifle, wounding the deceased in the chest and both arms. The getaway vehicle fled the scene in the direction of Ezakheni.

She was taken to hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

A case of murder was opened at Ladysmith police station for investigation by Lt Colonel Zwane.

ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma previously called on police to increase their visibility in known hot-spots and to beef up security ahead of the August 3 elections.

“We are concerned that as we near the local government elections, we are losing our ward candidates. What is more saddening is this cowardly act of killing our comrades in front of children.”

He pleaded with ANC members not to take the law into their own hands.

Political analysts have pointed fingers at the ANC list process.

It is interesting to note that any ward candidate on the party list – even if they are killed before the elections, but win in the votes – still get elected to office, thus forcing a by-election to be held at a later stage.
