How to get Pokémon Go in SA now!

There have been reports of people being robbed and attacked in other parts of the world while playing

Pokémon Go is a must-have for any cell-phone that has the label ‘Smartphone’. It is a gaming phenomenon!

“One of my kids has it and seems to be enjoying it. Talk about getting your kids off the couch and out into the real world,” says Ladysmith Gazette Editor Rod Skinner. However, he warned, “SA is not a safe place for youngsters to be running around chasing imaginary characters on their own.”

There have been reports of people being robbed and attacked in other parts of the world while playing.

The augmented reality game for iOS and Android from Niantic Labs and Nintendo has taken the world by storm…

Err, sorry if we lost you there… Let’s explain “augmented reality”. Basically, it is a game that utilises the real world (in this case, Google Maps and Street View) to create a game within a real-world environment.

Still too technical?

Okay, it tells you there is a Pokémon outside your house, you run outside and while nothing is there on your phone, you see a Pokémon. Sound’s un-fun, but in a world starved for “the next big thing”, this is it!

Even though the game has not officially been released worldwide, it still works in places like South Africa.

This is because Go draws on the location data that Niantic collected for its other augmented reality apps, like Ingress (more techno-babble).

The important bit: how you can get Pokémon Go onto your phone in South Africa…

Be warned, you do so at your own risk.

The game takes place in the real world and some areas in this country are dangerous.
