Maths titans take on trigonometry equations

"Although it is still early days, it is fair to say that K2U has shown that maths can be enjoyed, learnt and mastered by almost everyone. "

The complexities of trigonometry were unravelled at Talana Museum when K2U launched their ‘clash of the mathematical titans’ programme.
Over 60 Grade 10 maths students from Dundee High, Dundee Secondary, Sarel Cilliers and ML Sultan assembled last Monday to learn how to master their trigonometry section of their CAPS curriculum.
Put through their paces by the articulate Greg Shapiro of K2U, the students knuckled down to eight hours of gruelling training.
The initiative has the backing of Mayor, Thulani Mahaye, who is also the principal of Dundee Secondary and Dion Sadaw of the local Education Department.
“The students’ initial results and comments were outstanding and exceeded everyone’s highest expectations,” Greg told the Courier. “Well over 80% of attending students reported on their feedback forms that they thoroughly enjoyed the programme and would highly recommend this course to all or most of their friends. Almost everyone indicated that they were able to understand the maths, which was evident from the results achieved in their initial assessment (which was conducted at the end of the day).”
Greg told the Courier that K2U is very grateful to the sponsors ‘for helping us run this important paradigm-changing event – we cannot do enough to help our students succeed at maths, we hope that many more sponsors will come on board now that we have proven the value of this type of intervention.’
“Although it is still early days, it is fair to say that K2U has shown that maths can be enjoyed, learnt and mastered by almost everyone.
“We are looking forward to seeing the final results and all the trigonometry distinctions that these committed and diligent students will achieve at the K2U prize giving evening to be held in August.”
