Update: Workers threaten town’s water supply

uThukela would like to inform the community that there might be interruptions in the water supply due to workers being on strike

The uThukela offices came to a standstill this morning (Tuesday) as union workers staged a protest.

The municipal workers began their strike action in front of the uThukela offices in Lyell Street. However, they had only been given permission to protest in Forbes Street and not Lyell Street. Police ordered them to move away and they complied, moving to the back of the building in Forbes Street and blocking the entrance with rocks and stones.

The protesters say no one wants to hear their grievances and that is the reason for the strike.

They are upset due to perceived lack of equality within the workforce. They allege that workers who fall under another union receive preferential treatment.

uThukela would like to inform the community that there might be interruptions in the water supply due to workers being on strike and having threatened to shut down water to the uThukela District.

uThukela apologises for any inconvenience caused.
