Newcastle businessman’s killer brought to book

The victim was held up at gunpoint before being murdered.

MADADENI – The murder case of a Chinese businessman, killed at his business premises in Madadeni, finally reached conclusion on June 24 when his killer was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Madadeni High Court.

23-year-old Sandile Mkhize was sentenced to life imprisonment for one count of murder, 15 years for robbery with aggravated circumstances, five years for attempted murder and three years for the possession of unlicensed firearm.

A police report revealed that on the morning of May 29, Mkhize held up 37-year-old Xiaoming Zhang and his co-worker at gunpoint, subsequently shooting Zhang dead and seriously injuring the co-worker.

Before fleeing the scene, Mkhize robbed the victims of an undisclosed amount of money.

Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said: “Charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery were opened for investigation at Madadeni SAPS. The detectives took over the investigation and the accused was tracked down in the Kwa-Nongoma area for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. He was arrested three days after he committed a crime. Bail was successfully opposed against the accused until his sentence.

“He was convicted after a well prepared evidence was presented to the judge and the accused was found guilty as charged.”

KZN police have welcomed the sentence handed down for the armed robbery and murder of Zhang.

Acting Provincial Commissioner of KwaZulu-Natal, Major General Bhekinkosi Langa noted: “This shows our detectives are using the skills and technology available at their disposal to make sure enough evidence is collected and presented at court.”

Major General Langa also thanked community members who came forward and submitted statements, which are said to have made the SAPS case stronger in court.
