Municipality celebrates the youth

Various stakeholders from different institutions were also invited to be part of the programme

Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality’s Youth Development Office held a Youth Commemoration in the form of a lecture which took place at the KwaMthandi Community Hall on Wednesday, June 29.

Youth Month pays tribute to the school pupils who lost their lives during the June 16, 1976, uprising in Soweto.

Various stakeholders from different institutions were also invited to be part of the programme.

Youth Development Office assistant manager Mr M Mazibuko explained the purpose of the event, and speakers from various departments explained what they do and how they assist the youth.

Deputy Mayor Sindi Mfusi delivered a message of support, highlighting the fact that this programme is aimed mainly at educating the youth about our history and the role played by young people in the struggle during 1976. In his speech, Cllr TP Makhaza said that this year’s National Youth Day marks the 40th anniversary of the June 16, 1976, student uprising.

The country is celebrating the heroism of students who stood up to the apartheid state as they fought for their rights and the liberation of their country from racial oppression.

“We are looking up to you as the youth to move South Africa forward. The future of this country is in our youth, who are armed with the most powerful weapon of all, which is education,” said Cllr Makhaza.

WTF (hip-hop), Khuzani (Maskandi) and various local artists performed at the event.
