Youth receive certificates for their achievements
Children and youth from pre-primary to Grade 12 are taught by qualified teachers
The Ramakrishna Centre of South Africa, Ladysmith Sub-Centre, held its certificate awards evening for its Children’s Educational Programme (CEP) on Friday, June 10, at the Ladysmith Civic Hall.
130 certificates were awarded to children who successfully completed and / or who regularly attended the Sub-Centre’s CEP classes. All awardees also received gift packs comprising snacks.
Reverend Swami Sumanasananda, president of the Ramakrishna Centre of SA, handed over the certificates and delivered the keynote address. The programme also included a choir of 90 children rendering an anthem to Sri Ramakrishna. A heartwarming, short skit depicted the life of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi. Eloquent speeches on aspects relating to emotional intelligence and a vibrant, colourful, dramatic dance were part of the evening’s entertainment.
The Ramakrishna Centre offers Hinduism for children classes every Thursday from 5.30pm to 6.30pm. These classes are held at the Ramakrishna Shrine in Agra Road.
Children and youth from pre-primary to Grade 12 are taught by qualified teachers.
Age-appropriate and structured classes are held on material ranging from colour and learning to the Ramayana. A light meal is served to all the children at the end of each class. Examinations are held at the end of each academic year, and children are handed certificates at a special awards programme.
Swami Vivekananda believed that education is the manifestation of the divinity already within man. He said that “education is not the amount of information that is put into your head and runs riot there; undigested all your life. We must have life-building, man-building, character-making assimilation of ideas.”
These Hinduism for children classes not only teach children and youth about Hindu scriptures and philosophy, but are also focused on character-building and imparting valuable life skills, making children and youth well-rounded individuals. Parents are encouraged to send their children to these classes.

National Youth Day saw a Youth Day Karma Yoga Programme being held on Thursday, June 16, starting at 10.30am.
The programme began with satsang, with songs on Sri Ramakrishna, Lord Ganesha and Lord Ram. After the satsang, Ms Tashnika Gajoo delivered a short talk entitled ‘Karma Yoga, the art of selfless service’ in the Swami Vivekananda Family Welfare Centre. Lunch Prasadham was offered to all. The youth were then divided into groups for the distribution of 400 loaves of bread, 200 one-litre containers of milk and 200 vegetable packs to people living in impoverished communities in Ladysmith. 45 children and 25 adults attended the programme.
