Teacher suspended for beating learners

Watch as the teacher dispenses corporal punishment to female learners

A teacher has been accused of using a pipe to beat learners at the Prince Tokotoko High School, Nongoma.

The video went viral on social media and the MEC for Education, Mthandeni Dlungwana, has ordered the suspension of the female teacher.

The teacher is expected to soon appear before a disciplinary hearing.

This morning, MEC Dlungwana visited the school and ordered the suspension with immediate effect of the teacher whose despicable act was seen in the video taken by one of the learners.

MEC Dlugwana met members of the School Governing Body (SGB), School Management Team (SMT) led by the Principal, learners and various community structures. During a meeting, a visibly angry MEC Dlungwana spoke very strongly about corporal punishment, saying his department will not tolerate a situation where learners are abused in an environment where learners are expected to be prepared to be better people.

“What has happened at this school is very disappointing. We want to make it clear that we cannot allow it to happen again. Our role here is to make sure that we build and nature these young stars to become better people who will be able to lead this country in future. We should not be abusing them. In fact we should be fighting for their welfare,” said Dlungwana.

MEC Dlungwana apologised to the learners and parents for the behaviour of the teacher, saying that his Department will work closely with all the structures to ensure that what has happened never happens again.
