Khulisa Programme Manager, Thembi Sithole said 120 post matric girls from disadvantaged, rural areas in the Amajuba District had been selected to be part of the the initiative, to equip them with crucial life skills and further their studies to secure a better future for themselves and their families. Girls were selected from areas such as Madadeni, oSizweni, Blaauwbosch, Charlestown, Utrecht and Dannhauser.

“Each girl will be paired with a mentor, both locally and internationaly, who will work closely with them,” she said.

Mrs Sithole believes a programme such as GGBC is important to teach girls who may be susceptible to social ills, to respect themselves.

“Each girl will also have to design a give-back project of their own, and implement it in their community.”

Founder and CEO of GGBC, Linda Lockhart launched her first GGBC project in Kenya nine years ago, where she successfully helped 800 girls to improve their lives. She also launched the programme in China and India, and finally after a year-long pilot project, launched it in our home town, Newcastle.

Today, GGBC is the largest gender-based tertiary educational, mentoring and workforce-readiness programme, aimed at shaping the futures of girls.
