16 years of democratic local government celebrated

The Mayor took the community back to 2000 when local municipalities were established and she mentioned a number of service delivery initiatives and projects

This year marks 16 years of democratic local government in South Africa where all municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal will use this opportunity to celebrate its successes.

This milestone also gives communities an opportunity to reflect on the road travelled towards creating a better life for all through the provision of service delivery over the years. The Freedom Flame arrived at Imbabazane Local Municipality on May 27. The Mayor Phindile Strydom received the flame from uMtshezi Mayor Bongani Dlamini.

She was accompanied by Imbabazane Speaker Cllr MA Mkhize, Cllr AB Mthonti and other stakeholders, including the Imbabazane Minister’s Fraternal.

The flame was taken to Ntabamhlophe Police Station where it was kept overnight. On May 28 the flame was taken by Mrs Strydom to showcase municipal excellence. The first stop was at the Thwathwa Community Hall and Crèche in Ward three.

A visit was then made to the Mbangeni Vehicle Bridge in Ward five before the convoy of leaders proceeded to Ward 11 where the tarred road and housing project were showcased. In this ward; a community engagement session was held.

The Mayor took the community back to 2000 when local municipalities were established and she mentioned a number of service delivery initiatives and projects.

Amid other good stories to be told, the Mayor mentioned bursaries, RDP houses, electricity, roads and bridges. She stressed that there are many projects still to be completed after the merger of Imbabazane and Umtshezi municipalities.
