Accused sentenced after illegal hunting

The case was investigated by the Ladysmith Stock Theft Unit

Yesterday (Monday) morning, the Ladysmith Regional Court sentenced a 57-year-old accused to a R12,000 fine or three years’ imprisonment and a further three years in jail suspended for five years.

The conviction relates to the contravention of the Biodiversity Act.

This results from an incident that occurred in September last year in the Ladysmith area, where suspects using dogs illegally hunted game on a private game reserve.

Police traced accused Mambaso Cordelius Simelane to the Kwamthandi area, where they found the skin of a buck and other remains in his possession. Simelane was arrested.

DNA tests revealed that the skin belonged to a Reed Buck which is considered a threatened and protected species.

The case was investigated by the Ladysmith Stock Theft Unit.
