Boxes and other rubbish caught alight at the corner of Old Newcastle Road and Willis Street this afternoon (Monday).
Municipal workers who arrived in a truck to pick up refuse were surprised when they saw the big fire.
They contacted the Fire Department, who immediately responded.
It took firefighters only a few minutes to put out the flames.
