MUST WATCH: Ferrum’s gold performance

This viral video of Ferrum High's gold-winning choir is a must-watch.

Ferrum High School got a taste of gold at ATKV Applous over the weekend.

At the regional leg of the Afrikaans choral competition, Ferrum’s choir performed four pieces to clinch first place, and stand a good chance of an invite to the national leg in August.

Conductor, Rika Willemse expressed her pride at this outstanding achievement.

“We started rehearsing in February when the choir was chosen, with weekly training. Three to four weeks before the competition, we practised two evenings a week for about two-and-a-half hours.”

Mrs Willemse said it was a lengthy process, although the blood, sweat and tears had paid off.

The Ferrum High School choir also got in some stage time at the Michaelhouse Music Festival earlier this year.

ATKV Applous was a whole different ball game, however.

“It’s an Afrikaans competition, so there are strict regulations – we had to perform one piece which was given to us, another Afrikaans song of our choice, plus a song in any language, then one in any of the official languages. It was four works in different languages.”

A video of the choir in full song was published on Facebook by Susan de Kock, and shared by Johan Pieters.

The clip went viral and has attracted over 140 000 views.

Mrs Willemse said it boggled the mind.

“I am very proud. I pushed the choir to the limit; they are an awesome group of pupils.”
