Dundee soccer lads triumph in MYO tournament

A record number of 50 teams participated in this event dubbed as "The Newcastle World Cup".

The 13th annual MYO soccer tournament was held this past Saturday at Paradise stadium. A record number of 50 teams participated in this event dubbed as “The Newcastle World Cup”.
Teams from far as Piet Retief, Ermelo, Estcourt, Ladysmith, Vryheid, Dundee, Madadeni, Osizweni, Volksrust and Newcastle competed in this glamorous event. There were five age divisions for the youth to participate which compromised of under 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18. Players from all races and religious backgrounds grouped together in the spirit of brotherhood and love of soccer.
The standard of competition was high as teams fought hard showing off their skills to capture glory at the end of the day. Heavy rain towards the latter part of the tournament did not dampen the spirit of the youth and ensured that at the end of the day soccer was the winner.
The u/10 trophy was captured by Vryheid, while Zun Nuyran of Dundee secured victory in the under 12 category. Vryheid who were the defending champions in the u/14 group ensured that they were unbeaten second year in row and still remain champions of this group.
Newcastle teams Dominoes and Benfika were proud to clinch both the under 16 and under 18 divisions respectively. Mthanti Radebe of Vryheid was the junior player of the tournament, while Aadil Noorbahai of Dominoes Newcastle, walked away with the senior player of the tournament.

Estcourt’s Siratul Haq were unfortunate losing in three of the five finals and were awarded silverware for being the most dedicated and consistent team in the tournament.
The best goalkeeper senior was awarded to Samkhelo Radebe of Madadeni while Ashiq Johnson of Islamic College Newcastle secured the best goal keeper in the junior section.

The Muslim Youth Organization (MYO) thanks all sponsors that made this event a success, especially Bosco Butchery and Dr A.A Saheb of Newcastle. A special thank you to Ishan Samlal and his team of professional paramedics of TRIVS for the service and hospitality during the tournament.

Tournament director,Shabir Ismail, also iterated that sports unites our community and together we, as the community of Newcastle, can save our youth from the bad vices and elements that our youth face today.
The community can look forward to our next event which is the sunset walk in early September.
The countdown to MYO soccer 2017 has begun.
