Uthukela Cluster clamps down on crime

All the seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used to commit any crimes in the country

Police stations in the Uthukela Cluster have been clamping down on drugs and unlicensed firearms in the area.

In the past 24 hours, police officers in the Uthukela Cluster have arrested seven suspects for cases pertaining to drugs, unlicensed firearms and stolen property.

The clampdown began with Estcourt SAPS, who arrested two suspects, aged 28 and 36, for possession of suspected stolen property. The two were spotted in Alfred Street, Estcourt, yesterday morning.

Police are investigating the possibility that the stolen items, which included a toaster, may have been stolen from a property in Heritage Road, Estcourt.

This was followed by an arrest in Upper Tugela at about 10am, where a 27-year-old man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm in the Dukuza area. The seized firearm is a 9mm pistol.

On the same day in Ladysmith at around 2.30pm, police were working in the Alexandra Road bus rank.

They arrested a 49-year-old man who was found with 40 straws of powdered drugs, possibly whoonga.

The straws will be sent to a forensic laboratory for testing in order to determine exactly what drugs are contained in the straws. The estimated street value of the drugs is around R1500.

Last night in Bergville, police arrested a 29-year-old man in the Stulwane area for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The seized firearm is an AK-47 with 30 rounds of ammunition.

Ezakheni SAPS increased the tally by also arresting a man for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested in C2 Section. He was found in possession of a pistol and eight rounds of ammunition.

All the suspects appeared in magistrate’s courts in their respective areas today (Wednesday). All the seized firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in any crimes in the country.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the members for their persistence in bringing criminals to book and recovering unlicensed firearms. “The community must not feel ashamed in reporting those in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. Do not hide criminals, but expose them to the police so they will be arrested,” she said.
