Update: Carjacker re-arrested by VIS Unit

After his arrest, the suspect escaped from the hospital where he was receiving treatment

A 32-year-old man was re-arrested by the Ladysmith Vehicle Identification Section (VIS) yesterday (Tuesday) after escaping from custody.

In January, the Ladysmith K9 Unit intensified their patrols on the Helpmekaar Road after receiving info from their counterparts in Mooi River concerning a hijacked vehicle.

While on patrol on the Helpmekaar Road in the St Chad’s area, they came across the vehicle they had been looking for. The occupants opened fire when they saw the police and the officers retaliated, resulting in the arrest of two suspects.

One of the suspects sustained gunshot wounds and was placed under police guard in hospital. After his arrest, the suspect escaped from the hospital where he was receiving treatment.

A case of escaping from lawful custody was opened for investigation.

Detectives from Ladysmith VIS continued tracing the suspect and yesterday their efforts paid dividends.

Two dedicated VIS officers traced the suspect and located him in the Estcourt area. He was re-arrested and will face charges of carjacking, possession of stolen property and escaping from lawful custody.

The 32-year old appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court today (Wednesday).

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, is pleased with the re-arrest of the suspect. “Our detectives will work harder to see if the suspect was not involved in other crimes while in hiding after he escaped from custody,” she said.
