Conmen lurk in CBS waiting to pounce on ATM users

The ABSA ATMs (Dundee) are the latest haven for conmen after two cases of fraud were reported to the police.
On February 25 and 26, there were two separate cases of people being swindled out of their money while using the ATMs.
The first case occurred at about 4 pm when a man inserted his card into the machine and entered his pin only for the machine to return his card.
Thereafter, the fraudster offered to assist him with his card and in the process, disappeared with the card. After some time, the owner of the card received an SMS stating that R1 000 has been withdrawn from his card and a little later, another R1 000 was withdrawn.
The second incident took place the following day at 10:50 am when a fraudster, once again, offered to assist with a transaction. A little while later, the machine refused the card.
Later, the victim’s cellphone reported a cash withdrawal of R1 000 from his account.
“Members of the community must be accompanied by someone when going to withdraw money whether it is during the day or at night”, SAPS Communications Officer, Captain Mbense warned “Also check for strangers before inserting your cards into an ATM.”
