Park goes to the dogs?

A terrible stench lingers in the air and the municipality never seem to have the time or inclination to sort out the problem

“Once there was a beautiful park, but now it has gone to the dogs, literally speaking.” This is what Pieter de Bruyn complained to Cllr Abbas Warasally concerning the beautiful park and dam in Park Lane which is now filled with sewage and has also become a dumping ground of sorts.

There is no park left, as the playground has been vandalised and broken down. Overgrown grass and weeds run rampant, and dumping seems to be a permanent fixture. A terrible stench lingers in the air, and the municipality never seem to have the time or inclination to clean it up.

Pieter complained that the ward councillor lives in the area, but was also no help in solving the problem when the issue was raised. “The area has turned into an eyesore,” says Pieter. He also complained that Emnambithi/Municipality is failing the ratepayers by not collecting the rubbish that has been dumped in this park.

uThukela was contacted by Councillor Warasally to unblock three manholes that were blocked and feeding raw sewage into the dam. The same afternoon, uThukela went and fixed the manholes. “The smell gets really bad during the course of the day, and dogs feed on the bin bags and make even more of a mess,” added a resident.
