K9 officers and hijackers exchange gunfire

The suspects, both 28 years old, sustained gunshot wounds and are under police guard in hospital

K9 officers and hijackers shot it out on the Helpmekaar road on Wednesday afternoon last week after police received valuable information that a hijacked vehicle was en-route to Ladysmith.

The vehicle had been hijacked in Mooi River the previous Thursday morning.

After receiving the info about the hijacked vehicle from their counterparts in Mooi River, 13 officers from the Ladysmith K9 Unit intensified their patrols. While on patrol on the Helpmekaar road in the St Chad’s area, they came across the vehicle they had been looking for.

The occupants opened fire when they saw the police and the officers retaliated, which resulted in the arrest of two suspects. The suspects, both 28 years old, sustained gunshot wounds and are under police guard in hospital.

They will soon face charges of hijacking, attempted murder and possession of suspected stolen property. The recovered vehicle has since been impounded pending further investigation.
