We may think we know everything about Christmas, but as it turns out, many of the things we just assume are part of Christmas originate from a different back story. Here are a few facts about Christmas you may not have known.

  1. We give each other gifts to symbolise the gifts given to Jesus.
  2. Nowhere in the Bible does it actually state that Jesus was born on the 25th day of December.
  3. December 25 was most likely chosen as Christmas Day because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival known as Saturnalia.
  4. Due to the fact that it might have been of Pagan origin, religious people did not celebrate Christmas up until 1681. People were fined in Boston for celebrating Christmas.
  5. Christmas stockings, as we know them today, came from St Nicholas’ act of kindness when he threw a bag of gold down a poor old man’s chimney and it landed in a stocking that was drying by the fire.
  6. Santa Claus is based on a real man.
