We may think we know everything about Christmas, but as it turns out, many of the things we just assume are part of Christmas originate from a different back story. Here are a few facts about Christmas you may not have known.
- We give each other gifts to symbolise the gifts given to Jesus.
- Nowhere in the Bible does it actually state that Jesus was born on the 25th day of December.
- December 25 was most likely chosen as Christmas Day because it coincided with the ancient pagan festival known as Saturnalia.
- Due to the fact that it might have been of Pagan origin, religious people did not celebrate Christmas up until 1681. People were fined in Boston for celebrating Christmas.
- Christmas stockings, as we know them today, came from St Nicholas’ act of kindness when he threw a bag of gold down a poor old man’s chimney and it landed in a stocking that was drying by the fire.
- Santa Claus is based on a real man.
