Zanie Walker goes global

The picture of poise and perfection, Zanie Walker is a complete package made of ‘model material’.

With structured cheekbones and a disarming smile, the 15-year-old was blessed with what some could only achieve through intricate contouring and highlighting.

After competing in the South African Talent Championship (SATCH) earlier this year, Zanie was selected to represent the country at the Actors, Models and Talent for Christ Shine Convention in Orlando, Florida over the June/July period next year.

During the convention, scouts from mainstream companies like Sony BMG, VH1, ABC, Elite Models and Walt Disney, will be on the lookout for the next ‘big thing’.

While apprehensive about her daughter’s intention to pursue modelling, Charmaine Walker felt the opportunity presented itself at the right time.

“She only started modelling at the beginning of the year, and trained with Christine Harburn from Fancy That Models. I didn’t want her to start too early.”

Abiding by the popular rule, practice makes perfect, Zanie believes she has what takes to excel and make a name for herself.

“I think they chose me because I’ve got the smile,” she explained, a crimson flush rushing to her cheeks. “I plan to have a career in high fashion.”

Away from the catwalk, Zanie described her style as casual-chic. Her everyday look consists of high-waisted denim shorts, a blazer and T-shirt.

The teen hopes to live up to the standards set by Kendall Jenner, who capitalised on her more natural, yet exotic features.

“I want to be a role model for young girls. I don’t want to be fake; natural is more beautiful than plastic,” she said.

Zanie’s method for looking flawless in front of the camera is practically foolproof.

“Raise your eyebrows and blow a bit of air out through your mouth; this will make your lips look bigger.”

During her time at SATCH, Zanie paid close attention, and returned to Newcastle with a wealth of knowledge. She said the judges requested a ‘blank canvas’, and instructed competitors to keep their makeup to a minimum.

“The judges didn’t want her to be all dolled up. They don’t want to see what you can do to yourself, they want to see what they can do with you,” added Mrs Walker.

While her recent success plays heavily on her mind, Zanie vowed to work hard and find a healthy balance between her education and budding career.

She admitted she didn’t realise how important a clear complexion was until she started taking part in competitions. She opted to drink water regularly and switch up her beauty routine in pursuit of a rosy-cheeked glow.

Zanie will travel to Orlando as part of the SATCH group, who will visit either Universal Studios or Walt Disney World during the course of their stay. Mrs Walker will meet up with the group at a later stage, where she plans to take full advantage of her time in a foreign country.

“With me there, we’re going to stay behind for a few days. We cannot go overseas and not stop off in New York, but we’re still in the planning stages,” said Mrs Walker.

Zanie envisions a life on the streets of Paris or New York, where she plans to become a professional model, while maintaining a strong moral compass.

“My advice to aspiring models is to believe in yourself and trust in God,” she concluded.

With an opportunity to leave her mark on the international stage, the doe-eyed beauty certainly has her work cut out for her.

The Newcastle Advertiser wishes Zanie a safe trip to Orlando, and trusts she will fly the town’s flag sky-high.
