Shave a life this Movember

This year, Ncandu 86 has elected to host a Movember fund-raising party, focused mainly on the up-and-coming moustaches they hope Newcastle men will sport.

Men’s health takes centre stage for the duration of November.

On the local front, organisations such as the Ncandu 86 Round Table are using their influence to change the face of male health in what is now dubbed Movember.

Tabler, Karl Niebuhr is up for the challenge.

“The Movember initiative appeals to me, as many times, especially with cancer awareness, a lot of people don’t realise the severity of both testicular and prostate cancer among both older and young men.”

Karl is among those brave men who believe Movember is a fun and alternative way to raise both awareness and funds.

The attention drawn by outrageous moustaches he described as excellent, even if it did deflect the loyalties of the fairer sex.

“It makes for a very interesting and alternative month.”

Explaining the unique position of Round Table to make a difference, Karl said the organisation was all about fellowship among young men, having fun and raising both awareness and funds for various causes.

“We thus feel by doing fun projects for causes, we can get as many people involved as possible, get some funds raised and ultimately get both our name out there, and the cause’s too. This is what we are all about – helping other people.”

November 6 has been confirmed as the date for the party.

“Our Round Table Movember Party takes place at Melo’s Pub and Grill on Friday between 6pm and 7pm. The first 120 people receive a complimentary Hansa or Castle draught.”

Concluding, Karl said he thought times were changing more for the positive, compared to the past, where it was taboo to speak out about men’s health, and cancer was taken less seriously.

However, he said there remained scope for improvement on all fronts.

“Initiatives like Movember take the embarrassment out of the whole situation, and focuses instead on the positives of regular check-ups and the health benefits they have. I believe this has to be a great step in the right direction.”
