Jail time for possession of unlicensed firearms

3 years in jail for 2 suspects convicted of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition

Two suspects were convicted and sentenced to jail time on Friday, October 30, for firearm-related offences.

Lindokuhle Zondi (22) was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment for being found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court further declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

On Thursday, May 7, Ezakheni Crime Prevention and officers on deployment from Kimberley Public Order Policing were performing a stop and search operation in Exakheni C-Section next to Indonsakusa. While patrolling, they came across a man who ran away when he saw them.

The officers gave chase and apprehended the suspect. When they searched him, they found a 9mm pistol with a loaded magazine and seven rounds of live ammunition.

The serial number of the firearm had been erased.

The accused was placed under arrest and a case docket was opened at Ezakheni SAPS for further investigation.

Also on Friday, October 30, in a separate case, the Ezakheni Magistrate’s Court convicted and sentenced Skhumbuzo Hadebe (40) to three years in jail for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The court also declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

This conviction follows an incident which occurred on Saturday, May 15, when the Cluster Trio Crime Task Team and Ladysmith TRT were on duty and received information of an unlicensed firearm in possession of a security guard at a tuck shop in C3 Section.

The officers found the accused, who had a 9mm pistol with serial number erased in his possession, plus one live round of ammunition. The accused was arrested and a case docket opened at Ezakheni SAPS.

Both dockets were allocated to Constable NM Mvemve for investigation.
