‘Feral’ dogs euthanised after severe neglect

The Newcastle SPCA was forced to put down all five dogs.

Five dogs had to be euthanised on November 3, due to severe negligence.

According to Newcastle SPCA Inspector, Elize van Rooyen, it was alleged the owner of the dogs withheld information when he reported the ‘wild, aggressive dogs’ to the SPCA.

“The owner claimed the animals were those of a friend who had dumped them at his house and never returned to collect them,” explained Ms van Rooyen.

Only upon arrival at the abandoned house, did the SPCA realise the dogs belonged to the gentleman who reported it.

“The dogs were so aggressive we could not get near them without them trying to bite us,” elaborated Ms van Rooyen.

In her opinion, the canines were deprived of human contact and affection to such an extent, they had become wild and aggressive.

A concerned neighbour admitted one of the dogs had bitten an elderly gentleman a few days prior.

The SPCA demanded intervention from the owner, in order to assist in capturing the animals.

“Our efforts failed. It was impossible to calm or capture the wild dogs.”

Ms van Rooyen further said it was impossible to rehabilitate or domesticate dogs that were in such a severe state.

“They will always be aggressive, and they will always bite people.”

Sadly, the negligence of the owner resulted in a tragedy for the five canines, as the SPCA was forced to euthanise them.

“Why must people lie when it concerns their animals? To see how un-socialised they were was very upsetting. I mean, those poor dogs never stood a chance,” concluded a furious Ms van Rooyen.
