The five escaped prisoners were found in Madadeni this morning.

The five prisoners who escaped from Dundee Prison on Saturday night, October 31, were arrested in Madadeni this morning.

Major Thulani Zwani from KwaZulu-Natal police media centre, said the prisoners were arrested following an operation by Dundee detectives, Crime Intelligence and the Newcastle K9 Unit, after information was received that the suspects were hiding in a Madadeni resident’s home.

Cassim Alijan, Bongani Kubheka, Bongonkosi Sithebe, Mondli Gamede, Lethukuthula Shabala had originally been imprisoned for charges ranging from burglary to murder and rape.

The men will be appearing in Dundee Magistrate Court tomorrow, November 5, and face charges of escaping from lawful custody.

Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, commended police for the swift arrest.

“I want to thank the community who came forward with the information that assisted the police in locating the escapees. This is an indication of the strong partnership between police and the community in the fight against crime. We will also be investigating the owner of the house where the escapees were found and he could be charged for harbouring prisoners,” she said.
