A stream of books flow into Utrecht school

As part of its social responsibility initiative, Mainstream Renewable Power South Africa's Cape Town Office donated a mobile library to Umlwane Primary School in Utrecht.

As part of its social responsibility initiative, Mainstream Renewable Power South Africa’s Cape Town Office donated a mobile library to Umlwane Primary School in Utrecht.

The donation was made in conjunction with Dynamic Learning Methods, a local company which procured 800 books on behalf of Mainstream Renewable Power.

Mike Mangnall, Mainstream’s country development manager, said the company was dedicated to ensuring the youth of South Africa received the best education in mathematics, science and technology.

“Mainstream believes in the upliftment of communities and we hope the books will benefit the school and its pupils,” he said.

Barry Rai from Dynamic Learning Methods, encouraged Umlwane’s staff to ensure pupils took full advantage of the library.

“In the long run, it will help children pursue a tertiary education and they can eventually come home and secure employment.”

With the books written in English, Mr Rai emphasised understanding the language was imperative to secure the basics in mathematics and science.

Gabriel Mahaye, manager of Umzinyashana circuit which Umlwane Primary fell under, agreed with Mr Rai and encouraged teachers to teach classes in English as it would later help pupils in the business sector.

“Books won’t change pupils, unless you give them a chance to read,” he concluded.
