Two die in smash; witnesses complain emergency services ‘were late’

The accident took place approximately 9km away from the local SAPS.

Two men died and a third sustained serious injuries on Friday evening after a white bakkie lost control, overturned and crashed into a tree on the Wasbank Road near Kameelkop (Ekuvukeni/Wesselsnek turnoff).

The victims were TG Nkosi from Vryheid and Siyabonga Mkhaliphi from Glencoe. Mduduzi Shabalala, also from Glencoe, survived the crash.

According to witnesses, the bakkie came ‘flying’ around a corner and lost control.

“As we approached the scene we saw two bodies lying outside the car. They had been flung out of the vehicle they were travelling in,” stated a witness who did not want to be named.

A third man, who was the driver, was stuck inside the car and was only seen by his moving hand.
The men proceeded to pull him out of the vehicle and laid him next to the car.
After some time he passed away.

“When we called the police the first time, these men were all alive,” another witness said.

It is uncertain when the other man passed away.

The Ekuvukeni police arrived at the scene after an hour and the ambulance about two hours later.
