No date set for flights

Confidential sources revealed the plan to have Airlink establish chartered flights was delayed, owing to Newcastle Airport failing to meet Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirements.

There remains hope for scheduled flights between Newcastle and Johannesburg.

Confidential sources revealed the plan to have Airlink establish chartered flights was delayed, owing to Newcastle Airport failing to meet Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirements.

The ‘anomalies’ discovered mean the provisional launch date of August was not met.

A source within Airlink explained the company was still looking into establishing the flight service, but was awaiting implementation of required steps by the Newcastle Municipality.

He stated the local facility was not up to the required standard.

“I can’t reveal too much more, but compliance with the CAA is required.”

It was previously stated fencing, scanners and detectors, and an on-hand fire and disaster team formed part of the outstanding requirements for Newcastle Airport’s continued development.

Once the Newcastle Airport meets these, a revised date for chartered flights will follow.

Plans previously revealed by Development Planning and Human Settlements Portfolio Councillor, Matthew Shunmugam suggested the techno hub, hydroponic plant and a research facility would be established at the airport site.

In terms of flights, proposed flights would be made with a 28-seater aircraft, ferrying passengers between Newcastle and OR Tambo International Airport.

“This is much more convenient and the deterioration of roads between here and Newcastle is a marketing point. Flights will be safer, more convenient and eliminate the need for vehicle park-overs.”
