Update on the rabies situation within the Midlands

So far 42 cases have been reported, with a number of species involved in the outbreak

The jackal hosted outbreak that started in January 2015 is continuing within the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, with the latest case of a Serval found in the Mooi River area.

So far 42 cases have been reported, with a number of species involved in the outbreak. This outbreak according to Veterinary Services remains a jackal cycle, with other species being victims of this primary host.

As predicted no mass die off’s have occurred in cattle, with mostly individual animals contracting the disease within herds. Mass vaccination campaigns in the surrounding areas of Impendle and Vulindlela have been conducted to attempt to contain the cycle within the wildlife population, and prevent southward spread.

At this point there is little that can be done to contain the outbreak, but it is expected to die out naturally, with a change in the jackal population. The original outbreak in Uthukela area died out over time and we believe that the current outbreak is slowing and will eventually stop.

Important things to remember:
1. Ensure all dogs are vaccinated! (It is a legal requirement)
2. Maintain vigilance and report any unusual behaviour in any terrestrial mammal.
3. Remember that WILD becomes TAME and TAME becomes WILD (general rule, but many exceptions exist). Almost all wildlife cases have unexpectedly arrived on farms or houses, apparently unafraid, and fought with dogs.
4. NEVER touch a wild animal!
