Japie dons the driver’s cap

Champion drinkers, there’s a new friend in town.

Champion drinkers, there’s a new friend in town.

While the conversation in pubs might not always be factual, Japie Dantuma is using a chat over drinks to serve the local community.

His aim is to establish a private taxi service in the near future.

“The plan was initiated in the pub, when I was talking to Charlie Hawthorne. We were chatting about taxi services and found there was no private taxi coverage in Newcastle. It got me thinking.”

Admitting people stretched the limit when out partying, Mr Dantuma said it was often a matter of time until the law took its course.

And with the Rugby World Cup in full swing, he believes it will become madness.

“I have everything to gain and nothing to lose by offering this service to the Newcastle drinking community.”

For now, Mr Dantuma has listed his idea on local Facebook pages, and has received positive feedback from residents.

However, he is looking to keep the service on a small scale.

“The idea is if you go to party, I can drive you home. I do reserve the right to eject you from the vehicle if you are abusive.”

Mr Dantuma is still deciding on the pricing structure and provisional name.

“I am doing this in my private capacity, so I will look at a proper name if this project takes off.”

Asked what he loves most about driving, Mr Dantuma said it would have to be a comfortable vehicle. He is no stranger to regular distance driving.

“There is no compromise on safety – you have to look after your car with regular services.”
