Diwali celebration for the community

A famous sage once said, ‘lay down your comforts, your pleasures, your name, fame and fortune and maybe even your life. Make a bridge of human chains over which millions will cross the ocean of life and thus bring all the forces of good together.’
Diwali (or deepavali, the “festival of lights”) is an ancient Hindu festival celebrated every year.
Diwali is the biggest and the brightest festival and spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness. This victory is best celebrated together with friends and family and praise is given to god for all the blessings in our lives.
Diwali is one of the happiest celebrations with significant preparations.
People clean their homes and decorate them for the festivities. People buy new clothes and gifts for family members and friends which typically include sweets and dried fruit. It is also the period when children hear ancient stories, legends and myths about battles between good and evil or light and darkness from their parents and elders. Girls and women go shopping and create rangoli and other creative patterns on floors, near doors and walkways. Young and old help with lighting and preparing for fireworks.
Prayers are offered before one or more deities, the most common being Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity.
On Diwali night, fireworks light up the neighborhood skies. Later, family members and friends celebrate the night over food and sweets.
The salt of life is selfless service and the Dundee Hindu Cultural Committee is dedicated to the noble task of inviting the entire community to a Diwali celebration at the Dundee Hindu Temple hall on Saturday, October 31 at 2.30pm for 3pm.
The well known musical group, Eastern Touch, from Durban will render north and south Indian songs. Cultural dances will be performed by various talented children from Dundee and surrounding areas. Delicious meals and refreshments will be provided.
The spirit of humanity is sometimes dimmed and overshadowed by everyday occurrences.
Please join us and let the intense glow of Diwali bring love and light into our lives.
