Community to blame for sewage spills

People try to flush sanitary towels in their toilets and these result in the blockages.

UNHAPPY community members have been coming into the Vryheid Herald offices to voice their complaints regarding the sewage spill at the corner of Heeren and Mason Streets which is causing a dreadful smell.
According to residents around the area, the matter has been ongoing for about three months now and that although the municipality has been contacted, they seem to only temporarily fix the issue as it seems to continue a few weeks later.
The Vryheid Herald contacted the councellor of the area Cllr Harry Heyns who admitted that he was very much aware of the matter as he himself had written a letter to the municipality requesting intervention.
Cllr Heyns said that there are several sewage spills in town and that the cause for these are the same, people try to flush sanitary towels in their toilets and these result in the blockages.
“I have went to most of these blockages myself and seen that it is always the case. The municipal workers are also getting tired of attending to the same issue as people seem to never learn,” said Cllr Heyns.
Although it is the municipality’s responsibility to ensure that these blockages are attended to, community members also have a responsibility to help minimise these unnecessary blockages.
Community members are advised to avoid flushing sanitary towels and face wipes as these clog up the system and make a base for other objects to attach themselves to.
