Illegal firearms recovered in Weenen

The recovered firearms include a R1 rifle, two 9mm pistols and a .32 special revolver

Several illegal firearms were recovered in Weenen by the Provincial Response Service and Pietermaritzburg Public Order Police on Thursday, October 1.

Three suspects were arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

They appeared in the Weenen Magistrate’s Court on Friday, October 2. Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said that members conducted an operation in Weenen at about 8pm and illegal firearms were on their radar.

“The officers searched a few homesteads suspected to have illegal firearms and found a total of four unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” said Major Zwane.

The recovered firearms include a R1 rifle, two 9mm pistols and a .32 special revolver.

These firearms will be sent for ballistic testing to establish if they were used to commit any crime in South Africa.

KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni commended the members involved during this operation.

“Such operations will continue in our province to get rid of illegal firearms that is allegedly used in the commission of crime such as murders and robberies.

“In order to ensure that we successfully remove these guns from the criminals, we need a full support from the community and give us valuable information that will lead to the recovery and arrest of the criminals,” she said.
