Sewage spill a health hazard

The sewage flows into the nearby river, which in turn flows to Klipfontein Dam.

AN ISSUE of a sewage spill has left residents in Mason Street in a very stinky situation, but this is not the only concern around the matter.
Residents reported to the Vryheid Herald that the AbaQulusi Municipality had been contacted countless times to sort the matter out but to no avail and it has been that way for the past three months.
It is unclear what triggered the burst sewage-pipe, which has fast created a mini-dam at the park at the corner of Mason and Heeren Streets.
Residents say that the stench is unbearable and seems to be getting worse as the days get warmer.
“They did send people last week but they did not seem to be looking at the problem area, they merely dug holes at the area across the road from this mess then left,” said one angry resident.
The sewage flows into the nearby river, which in turn flows to Klipfontein Dam.
This raises many questions about the health hazards in the water consumed by Vryheid residents, which was under scrutiny earlier this year for being unfit to drink.
The Vryheid Herald is still awaiting comment from the municipality
