Cop faces corruption charges

The constable allegedly took money from an accused and promised that the case against him would disappear

A 39-year-old police officer was granted bail yesterday after being charged with corruption.

The constable was arrested and charged on September 30 after he allegedly took money from an accused facing intimidation charges. It is alleged that the constable promised to make the case against the accused disappear.

Following an intensive investigation by the KZN Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, the police officer was arrested in the Ladysmith CBD.

He appeared yesterday in the Ladysmith Magistrate’s Court and was granted bail of R2000.

The case was postponed to October 26.

KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the officers involved in the arrest of the suspect. “We appeal to the community to report any corruption to the police so that corrupt officers can be charged accordingly. This will send a clear message to other members that no one is above the law,” she said.
