A walk for peace

Keeping Gandhi's values alive and raising funds for community based projects, the Gandhi Development Trust’s (GDT) Peace Walk passed through Newcastle last Thursday on their way from Volksrust.

Mahatma Gandhi’s name is synonymous with peace, tolerance and non-violence.

Keeping Gandhi’s values alive and raising funds for community based projects, the Gandhi Development Trust’s (GDT) Peace Walk passed through Newcastle last Thursday on their way from Volksrust.

Under the auspices of the Rising Sun, a Caxton publication based in Lenasia, participants walk a gruelling 750 kilometres from Gauteng to Durban.”We experienced some hectic heat and have been walking every day for 11 to 12 hours,” said Rising Sun CEO, Vijay Maharaj.

Newcastle was the team’s sixth stop on their way to Mahatma Gandhi Settlement in Inanda, Durban.

Despite the excruciating heat, Mr Maharaj said the team fared extremely well.

“We have had some challenges, such as blisters, which we have to treat every day.”

Other obstacles included roadworks, walking on uneven roads, and trucks when there were virtually no side paths for pedestrians.

Mr Maharaj said to date the team had been covered for every kilometre that they walked.

“We intend to have the entire way covered,” he said.

Started on September 19, the walk is set to be complete on October 2, on Gandhi’s birthday.
