A family-sized angling catch

Fishing has passed down from grandfather to sons, then grandsons, Mr Mohunram himself a senior member of the Chelmsford Angling Club, awarded a trophy by the Natal Freshwater Association this season.

From generation to generation, the Mohunram clan are born fishermen.

On August 26, Dan Mohunram bagged a 3,97 kilogramme largemouth Florida Bass in Botswana, although his greatest catch is the bonds of family.

His legacy is one of fishing, over habits like drugs or booze.

Together with sons, Yathin and Ajay, Mr Mohunram enjoyed a week’s fishing trip to Selebi-Phikwe in Bostwana, taking to the Lestibogo Dam during spawning season for the bass.

Perfect weather did not equate to great fishing conditions, Ajay explained.

“Through all the trials and tribulations of our expedition, my dad managed to land the catch.”

In congratulating his father on behalf of family and friends, Ajay said the greatest thrill of fishing was operating as a father and sons team.

They enjoyed the thrill of ‘hunting’ for fish, preparing the boat and the tackle.

“This allows us bonding time as a close-knit family, and sharing our experience with our wives and children about the big one, which didn’t get away in this case.”

Fishing has passed down from grandfather to sons, then grandsons, Mr Mohunram himself a senior member of the Chelmsford Angling Club, awarded a trophy by the Natal Freshwater Association this season.

His greatest catch to date is a 10kg yellow-belly Rockard at Shelley Beach in 2009.

“My best bass fishing experience to date would have to be our trip to Botswana. We gained so much knowledge, experience and bonding time on this trip, and I hope we can do this again in the near future.”

Fishing to beat personal records, Mr Mohunram and sons are firm believers in catch and release etiquette, giving fish the chance to fight another day.

Advice passed down through the generations is, “The only fisherman you should try to be better than, is the fisherman you were yesterday.”
