Boy cradles injured dog for days

Every day after school, he fed and gave the dog fresh, clean water

Nine-year-old Thokozo Majola is a child who has a genuinely good heart, and it showed when a dog was knocked over in the Pieters industrial area on Monday last week.

A heartless driver hit the crossbreed and just left it there, with no intention of checking whether the dog was alive or dead.
Thokozo noticed the injured animal in the road as he was walking to catch his transport to school on Wednesday morning.

He moved the dog to the side of the road, where it was not in any danger of being hit by another passing vehicle. Every day after school, he fed and gave the dog fresh, clean water. He also put his jacket over the animal so that it could stay warm at night.

Living on the Pieters road, he had no idea who to phone for help.

On Friday, after asking his colleagues at school, Thokoza found out about a lady from Colenso who knew the Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL).

He approached the woman and got the AACL contact number. He then phoned Annamarie Koen from the league on Friday evening and told her about the injured dog.

Because it was dark and dangerous at that time of night, Annamarie waited until early Saturday morning to drive out. When her and her brother, Jaco Landman, got to the scene, they found the little boy comforting the injured dog. The dog still had little Thokozo’s jacket on, and there was fresh water and food nearby.

“It was a heart-wrenching scene, very touching to see how much this little boy cared.”

The dog had sustained a broken back and legs, and had to be put down due to the severity of its injuries.  Before Annamarie left with the dog, with tears in his eyes Thokozo hugged the injured animal and said, “We will meet again in Heaven one day.”

“He is an angel, looking after this injured dog for days and also getting help,” said Annamarie.

The Animal Anti-Cruelty League offered Thokozo a reward, but he refused. So the league decided to show their appreciation by awarding him with a medal, certificate of appreciation, and cash. This will be handed to him soon at his home.
