MUST READ: Booklets used for neighbourhood theft

The community is urged to be cautious about people handing out booklets in suburbs.

A thief has taken brazen steps to loot unsuspecting victims, after allegedly stealing 400 booklets on Saturday morning.

Elizabeth Govender said the booklets were stolen out of her vehicle in Paradise by a man who was allegedly on foot.

“A security guard from a neighbour’s premises saw the man take the booklets from my car and chased him. However, he managed to get away. The security guard then came and told me what he had seen,” Ms Govender said.

With no description of the suspect or his whereabouts, Ms Govender was shocked when she received a disturbing tip-off regarding her booklets.

“I got a phone call from a client today (September 15), who asked if I had sent someone to distribute the booklets. It was then that I found out the man was distributing the booklets, in order to steal from people’s yards,” Ms Govender exclaimed.

Dr Imran Keeka said his eight-year-old son’s bicycle had been stolen by the alleged suspect.

Dr Keeka explained the man came to his home to distribute the booklets.

“I was not at home at the time, but my wife told me the man was there, which I found interesting. My son spoke to the man while he was at our home, took one of the books and went inside.”

A short while later, Dr Keeka said his son noticed the bicycle was gone.

“He asked if we had seen it. It was then that I had made the connection. Ms Govender explained the booklets were stolen,” Dr Keeka said.

Furthermore, Dr Keeka said he found a box with some of the alleged stolen booklets outside his yard, which is why he speculated it was the same man responsible.

Ms Govender encouraged the community to contact her on 074 021 4677 if they come into contact with an individual handing out booklets.

Paradise residents are further encouraged to contact Mark Jacobs from Paradise Neighbourhood Watch on 071 412 1116 if any suspicious people are seen trespassing on their property.
