Cyclists go up against the Big Five

Experienced armed game rangers patrolled the race route while cyclists had to rise in teams and were issued with 'trackers', linked to a control centre to ensure their safety.

Cyclists had four days to sample stunning scenery and wildlife during the Isimangeliso Wetland Park race, covering 300km, in the far north of the Province.
Cornie and Jolandi Malan competed along with Chantall Carter and Rob Caskie, formerly of Fugitive’s Drift Lodge.
“Suburban cyclists do not often get a chance to cycle in Big Five Country. However, that’s what around 300 mountain bikers experienced in this race,” said Dr Malan.
The race, which included international riders, started in St Lucia and covered False Bay, Bonamani and finished in Mantuma, the main camp at the uMkhuzi Game Reserve.
