R10,5-million debacle resurfaces

The Newcastle Ratepayers’ Association (NRA) has rekindled the case of the missing Municipal millions.

The Newcastle Ratepayers’ Association (NRA) has rekindled the case of the missing Municipal millions.

In a letter to the Municipality this week, the NRA has asked for a formal response, stating the last report in regard to the R10,5-million was tabled in December 2012.

“…We noted the matter no longer features on Exco or Council agenda. The impression is created Council is no longer interested in having this matter finalised.”

NRA chairman, Chris le Roux said the community had a legal right to be informed of any progress, and if there was a chance of recovering the amount.

“This is a very serious matter which cannot just be ignored, and your earliest response will be appreciated.”

The missing Municipal millions made headlines approximately five years ago, after repeated incidences of fraud were uncovered by Municipal heads.

At the time, it was promised the perpetrators would be brought to book.
