UPDATE: Armed robbers to be charged

The suspects will be charged for robbery, as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

Four suspects were arrested shortly after the armed robbery this morning, not three as initially believed.

Captain Shooz Magudulela, police spokesperson, said the men were apprehended after the SAPS had received information that the men were fleeing in a white Polo with a GP registration.

The arrest was made through the combined efforts of the K9 Unit, Newcastle Detectives Unit, Newcastle Crime Prevention Unit and the Public Police Order Police.

During the arrest, the stolen cash and cellphones were recovered, as well as three pistols and several rounds of ammunition.

Another set of registration plates were also found in the car,” Captain Magudulela said.

Colonel Jay Naicker, spokesperson from the SAPS Corporate Communications Department, said the vehicle was impounded.

The vehicle was impounded since it was used in the commission of a crime and the ownership of the vehicle still needs to be confirmed.

The firearms that were seized will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the commission of any other crime,” he said.

Colonel Naicker added the suspects would be charged for robbery, as well as possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
